Recebi hoje o press-release (veja na íntegra clicando em DETALHES) da SuSE sobre o lançamento de sua distribuição com suporte específico para as características avançadas do Opteron, novo chip de 64 bits da AMD. A Red Hat planeja lançar versão similar no último trimestre, e a Mandrake já lançou sua versão em Março. A Microsoft também promete lançar uma versão do Windows para este chip em algum momento no futuro...

Vejo tanto falatório dele mas não vi/ouvi dele em lugar nenhum, e isto também é válido para o equivalente da Intel.

Nao sou protetor de linux mais windows, mas se este site como se diz é "sério", para que postar uma noticia e dar um alfinetada no windows ? Nao vejo razão... ao inves de se focar no linux tem que alfinetar o windows... isso gera guerrinhas e vc sabe disso, imagine usuarios windows vindo aqui falar mau do linux ?

Alfinetada seria se eu acrescentasse algum comentário do tipo "como sempre", ou "sempre atrasada". O que eu falei foi um fato: 2 distribuições de Linux já lançaram versão para o Opteron, outra já tem calendário definido, e a MS anunciou (até onde eu sei) que vai lançar uma versão no futuro, sem dizer exatamente quando ou o que. Você que quis enxergar alfinetada ali.

Aposto que até no press-release da Suse saiu a parte sobre windows...
Agora falando sério, este processador está entrando agora, já o itanium já está na sua segunda geração, mas infelizmente não é muito difundido (ainda).

O Linux não precisa do windows para conseguir projeção (ou será que é o contrário, precisamos sim que ele continue bugado), não é preciso falar do windows. Espaço e projeção é coisa que o Linux está conseguindo à sua própria custa e daqui a algum tempo caras como você que admira tudo que a M$ faz, ou se atualiza, ou muda de rumo ou está ferrado.
Tenho dois pensamentos sobre você:
- Você não trabalha para a M$, pois deve ser um incompetente que só deve ser basear no que lhe falam, nunca corre atrás para ver se é verdade
- Segundo (o mais óbvio), acho que vocêtem uma caso com algum funcionários da M$, só pode.

Zé do caixão mas o novo amd tem o diferencial sobre o intel que acho que é o ideal por não forçar uma mudança radical de 32 pra 64 bits....mesmo o itanium estando mais maduro.
Eu acho que a menção ao Windows na notícia foi importante sim. A mentalidade da galera funciona de uma maneira tal, que todo mundo pensa que é óbvio e natural que já existe uma versão do Windows para este chip, afinal ele nem seria lançado se não existisse, certo? Mas o fato é que não é bem assim... Só existe Linux :)
Acho até que o Windows atual roda nele, mas em modo 32bits. É igual gastar um dinheirão em um carro de luxo e fazer ele ser puxado por cavalos - num caso desses compensa mais comprar uma charrete :)
A principal diferença entre o Itanium e o Opteron é que a Intel optou por uma arquitetura RISC, enquanto a AMD preferiu fazer uma versão 64bits da arquitetura Ix86, por isso a compatibilidade com os atuais sistemas 32 bits Ix86.
O Tom's Hardware Guide publicou uma extensa análise (com benchmark) de um servidor Dual Opteron.

Creio que o Opteron ainda não está no mercado. Quanto ao Itanium, até onde sei só computadores "de marca" estão disponíveis por aqui.
Acabei de ler no IDG Now que o Opteron está sendo lançado oficialmente hoje (23), lá fora, e amanhã (24) aqui no Brasil.

Pelas informações que correm pela internet e revistas de informatica, o Opteron manteria uma compatibilidade 32 bits comas aplicações atuais, dando a enteder que os sistemas de 32 bits trabalharão sem problemas. Faz sentido que sistemas de código aberto tomem a diateira neste caso, acredito que os programadores, assim que por os olhos no codigo do processador vão logo criar uma soluçao que aproveite todo os recursos do mesmo,as vezes só pelo prazer de ver a coisa funcionar. Já uma empresa como a MS tem até uma burocracia por assim dizer, antes de chegar a um resultado final, fora outros projetos em andamento.
